Suminagashi and Ebru Paper Marbling

In this two day workshop, you'll learn the basics of paper marbling in both the Turkish and Japanese traditions—preparing materials, creating the patterns and making the print on paper.

Day 1 - You will learn the simple and meditative process of the Japanese technique of Suminagashi marbling, which is achieved by floating ink on water to form subtle designs of concentric circles that can be gently manipulated into complex, fractal-like waves and patterns.

Day 2 - You will learn the basics of Turkish marbling, also known as Ebru or 'cloud art’. In this method of marbling, the color is floated on a tray filled with caragheenan sized water, and the patterns are created using marblers rakes and combs, then ‘printed’ on paper.

Bring an apron or wear clothes that you don’t mind getting paint splattered!
