Being Matisse
March 8-9, 2008
Color, Design & Collage

This class will strengthen your understanding of color, form and composition by studying the methods Matisse used in his cutouts. Done at the end of his life, he used his scissors to draw free form shapes and let them interact on the wall over his bed.

The goal is not to replicate Matisse, but to affirm our own visual language of shape and to explore the possibilities of negative and positive space. Using the simplest of tools and materials - scissors, paper, paint and glue - you will learn how to manipulate space and create dynamic compositions.

We'll begin as Matisse did, by painting papers with washes and textures. While the paint dries, we'll do some exercises investigating compositional space, producing sketches and maquettes for collages. After lunch we'll cut our painted papers into shapes by "drawing" with scissors, and making a number of finished collages.

Artist Statement

Making art and feeling the force of language has been an irrepressible part of my life since childhood. I work in a variety of mediums and forms, including drawing, painting and stitching on paper and canvas—mixing media and incorporating language in my artwork.

Always it‘s the sensate experience of engaging with the materials to express ideas of beauty and memory, permanence and impermanence, the universal and the personal. The bare bones of drawing and words are the foundations I build on, as well as the unconventional use of materials such as gesso, shellac, charcoal and thread. Often my goal is discovery, to surprise myself by making something I’ve never seen before.
