Noir et Blanc
To be Rescheduled. Please stay tuned for the new date.
Black and white. Shadow and light. Silhouettes, shadow play, photo altering techniques, and printmaking methods will come together to make rich pages of a juicy book housed in an intriguing binder which will be provided for you. I'll take you through some guided work to add even more personal content to your pages. Various shades of black and white will create a range of tone that may surprise you. You'll find contrast to be sure, but the techniques lend themselves to soft or dreamlike applications.
Our book size is a fun 6x10. Bring along your favorite sturdy paper, 6-8 of acrylic paints in blacks and whites, 2 china markers- one in black and one in white, 2 gel pens- one black and one white, a small jar of acrylic gel medium in gloss, a small jar of gesso, and a dozen or so of your photos plus your photo assignments (noted below) printed in b & w on Staples brand matte photo paper. Enlarge the majority of them to 8 x 10 or so. If you want to alter them in various ways in photoshop, that's fine. I'll have other materials on hand for you to use as well- tissue paper, gelatin printing plates, brayers, stencils, etc.
While you will be amazed at what working in various shades of white and black will look like, you may if you wish, choose just ONE accent color. ONE. ONE. So, bring one tube of paint in that color. You will also want one gel pen and one pencil or china marker in that color.
Your photo assignments:
Photograph shadows of things, people, and your self.
Photograph yourself standing arms away from your body doing something - up int eh air, waving, pointing... these will become one type of of silhouette.
Photograph your face in profile. If you wear glasses, take them off first.
